Rachel Staunton is a London-based conductor, educator, and artistic leader, known for her visionary work in choral music and music education. Born in the north of England, Rachel was awarded a choral scholarship to read Music at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she graduated with first-class honours. She went on to complete postgraduate studies in Choral Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, and in 2018 was made an Associate of the Academy in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the choral field.
As Artistic Director and co-founder of London Youth Choirs (LYC) — a dynamic and inclusive choral organisation supporting over 600 diverse young singers across the capital — Rachel is passionate about harnessing the power of singing to inspire, empower and elevate young people. A dedicated advocate for equity in the arts, she has worked tirelessly to widen access to high-quality musical experiences for children and teenagers from all backgrounds.
Rachel’s earlier career includes roles as Vocal Director for In Harmony Opera North — named Classic FM’s Music Education Project of the Year — and a decade as Conductor and Assistant Director with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. She also established the Opera North Children’s Chorus, shaping its musical identity from the ground up.
Rachel is equally at home doing grass roots work in community halls to performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, which this year included conducting at the televised First Night of the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. She has directed choirs in performances for members of the Royal Family and has shared stages with global icons including The Rolling Stones and Diana Ross. Her work in the broadcast and film industries includes appearances on BBC Radio 3, ITV’s Good Morning Britain, as well as leading choirs in blockbuster productions ranging from Wallace & Gromit to Roald Dahl’s The Twits!
Shortlisted for the 2023 Francesca Hanley Inspiration Award (Music & Drama Education Awards), Rachel is widely recognised as a driving force for innovation, excellence, and inclusivity in choral music. Her leadership bridges the gap between the cultural and charitable sectors — placing people, artistry, and opportunity at the heart of everything she does.
