Recipient of the Outstanding Arts Teacher Award 2013 from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Ms. Nancy Cheng is widely recognized for her achievements in musical education.
Ms. Cheng received her Diploma in Music from Ueno Gakuen University in Japan and her Master of Arts (Music) from HK Baptist University. As Head of Music at Diocesan Girls’ Junior School (DGJS), Nancy led her choirs to 6 titles of “Most Outstanding Primary School Choir of the Year” at the HK Schools Music Festival. She was also the founder and conductor of DGJS Orchestra in 1992.
Since joining the Methodist School, she has been active training choirs and percussion bands, as well as directing Blacklight dramas and musicals. Her choir was named “The Best Hong Kong Primary School Choir” and won the Gold Prize at the HK International Youth Camp; Children’s Choir Festival 2011. In 2014 and 2016, she led the school choir to Taiwan at the Taiwan Crystal Choir Music Camp, and performed at the Karuizawa International Choral Festival (KICF) and Tokyo Disneyland Music Festival in Japan respectively.
Ms. Cheng enjoys teaching music and being involved in musicals and choral performances. She was the assistant conductor of Diocesan Graduate Singers since 2013. In 2015, Nancy led her singing ensemble, DSingers, to perform at KICF. She was invited to be an adjudicator for the Ensemble Contest and participated in Ko Matsushita’s conducting master-class. In 2018 and 2019 she was invited to host the 1st and 2nd Tokyo International Choir Competition and the prestigious choral competition, 1st The World Choral Championship in 2019. Inspired by maestro Ko Matsushita, she founded “Ko Chorus” in 2017, a mixed choir with passionate choristers and professional singers.
She has conducted Ko Chorus in a number of concerts and shared Japanese choral works to the local community. Ms. Cheng has been serving as a Music Selection Sub-committee member at HK Schools Music Festival since 1993, and an advisor of Hong Kong Virtuoso Chorus since 2015.
