Dr. Melody Sze holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University (MSU) and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She also earned a Professional Diploma in Western Opera from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Recognised as one of Hong Kong’s most active mezzo-sopranos, Dr. Sze has excelled in both opera and concert stages. Her principal operatic roles include the title character in Rossini’s *Cinderella*, Bizet’s *Carmen*, Elvira in Mozart’s *Don Giovanni*, Nicklausse in Offenbach’s *Tales of Hoffmann*, and Mrs. Grose in Britten’s *Turn of the Screw*. As a versatile concert soloist, her extensive repertoire features Mahler’s *Symphony No. 8* and *Song of a Wayfarer*, Bach’s *Magnificat*, and Mozart’s *Requiem*. Demonstrating strong cross-genre capability, she has also starred in musical theatre, performing the roles of Éponine and Fantine in *Les Misérables*, and Mrs. Potiphar in *Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat*.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, Dr. Sze has a proven track record of nurturing talent from beginners to professional musicians. She currently serves as a vocal instructor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and the Hong Kong Baptist University. Her previous academic appointments include positions at The University of Hong Kong, Macao Polytechnic Institute, and the Macau University of Science and Technology. Dedicated to youth music education, she has taught at the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Yip’s Children’s Choir and Macao Children’s Choir. Dr. Sze frequently adjudicates for major competitions, including the HK Students Open Music Competition and the Osaka International Music Festival, and consistently guides her students to top-tier competition prizes and exam successes.
