As music educators, do you sometimes wonder what more you can do in music classes to develop students’ musicianship and passion for music, and lay a solid foundation for the school’s choirs and orchestras? Such grand aspirations are often constrained by time and the diverse music background of our students, making it incredibly challenging to develop a music program that is interesting and meaningful for everyone.
In this workshop, Hong Kong-born music educator Louise Lui will share with us her extensive experience in teaching elementary music classes in Toronto, Canada. A popular music educator at the Toronto District School Board and a certified Orff instructor, Louise will demonstrate how she uses children’s poems and nursery rhymes as vehicles for teaching rhythmic and melodic concepts, with the goal of building musicianship in a fun and engaging manner that appeals both to the novice and the more advanced students. The workshop will also cover how we can teach improvisation to young students and assess students’ understanding of fundamental concepts with improvisation. Having served as Associate Conductor of the Toronto Children’s Chorus for five years, Louise will also teach us how to effectively connect what we teach in music lessons with our choral repertoire.
This workshop is highly recommended for primary school music teachers and music educators for children.
